- Fort Myers was incorporated in 1885 with only 349 residents. That same year Thomas Edison Bought 13 acres along the Caloosahatchee River and built a home/laboratory, “Seminole Lodge”, as a winter retreat.
- In 1898 Fort Myers because a nationally known winter resort destination with the building of the Royal Palm Hotel.
- The “City of Palms” nickname came from Edison’s efforts of lining McGregor Blvd with imported Royal Palms. Driving down McGregor Blvd today, many of the same palm trees are still a majestic site lining the roadside.
- Fort Myers is part of the Cape Coral- Fort Myers , Florida Metropolitan Statistical Area.As of 2016 the population for Fort Myers was 62,298.
